British scientists have successfully used DNA from three people to produce eight healthy babies free of devastating mitochondrial diseases. The experimental technique involved transferring nuclear DNA from the mother’s egg into a donor egg with healthy mitochondria before fertilization. Researchers from Newcastle University and Monash University reported the breakthrough in the New England Journal of Medicine after treating 22 patients. One additional pregnancy is still ongoing. This pioneering approach could prevent children from inheriting rare genetic disorders that affect energy-producing mitochondria.
