The Afghan data breach explained… in one minute

The Afghan data breach explained... in one minutennA UK Special Forces official accidentally leaked a spreadsheet containing personal details of 19,000 Afghan relocation applicants in 2022, exposing them to Taliban retaliation risks. The breach remained hidden until 2023 when names appeared on Facebook, prompting a government super-injunction to suppress the information. Secretly, the UK established the Afghanistan Response Route (ARR) in 2024 to relocate affected individuals, bringing over 16,000 people to safety by 2025. A government review found the leak may not have spread widely and was unlikely to be the sole cause of reprisals. The relocation scheme has cost £400 million so far, with both ARR and the main Afghan resettlement program now closed.
