Passengers rescued from Indonesia ferry fire

Posted on July 20, 2025

A passenger ferry, KM Barcelona 5, caught fire off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island while transporting hundreds of people from Talaud Islands to Manado. Over 560 passengers were rescued through a joint operation involving navy ships, coast guard vessels, and local fishermen who pulled survivors from the sea. Tragically, three people died, including a pregnant woman, with some victims found during the abandon-ship process. The rescue effort was complicated by discrepancies in the manifest, which listed only 295 people despite 568 survivors being documented. Indonesia’s frequent maritime disasters highlight ongoing safety challenges in the archipelago nation.
