They escaped Ukraine's frontlines. The sound of drones followed themnnUkrainian soldiers returning from the frontlines suffer from ‘droneophobia’ – trauma triggered by sounds resembling military FPV drones that hunted them. Everyday mechanical noises like lawnmowers or motorcycles now induce panic, with some soldiers even fearing buzzing insects in nature. The psychological toll extends to civilians in cities like Kherson, where Russian drone attacks have killed 84 people this year alone. One soldier describes drones creating constant tension where ‘silence is always the start’ of danger, while a wounded civilian recounts screaming at a bus stop attack. This new warfare reality has left both soldiers and civilians in a state of hypervigilance where ordinary environments feel like potential battlefields.
