At least 17 dead in South Korea floods and landslides

Posted on July 20, 2025

Torrential rains have battered South Korea for five days, killing at least 17 people and leaving 11 missing according to government reports. Recent fatalities include one victim whose house collapsed Sunday in Gapyeong and another swept away by floodwaters there, while 10 deaths occurred in Sancheong due to landslides and flash floods. The disaster has forced approximately 2,730 evacuations and caused widespread infrastructure damage across southern regions, which received up to 31 inches of rain since Wednesday. Though rain stopped and alerts lifted Sunday afternoon, rescue operations continue for missing persons in Gwangju and other affected areas. President Lee Jae Myung announced plans to designate special disaster zones for enhanced recovery support.
