nnScientists discovered a new species of stick insect in Australia’s Wet Tropics rainforest, believed to be the country’s heaviest insect. Named Acrophylla alta, it measures 40cm (15.75 inches) long and weighs 44g (1.55oz), comparable to a golf ball. The insect was found in high-altitude canopies of Far North Queensland, making it rarely visible without extreme weather events. Unique egg characteristics helped identify it as a new species. Specimens have been added to the Queensland Museum collection for future research.
