South Korea’s ex-president Yoon Suk Yeol rearrested

Posted on July 10, 2025

South Korea’s former president Yoon Suk Yeol has been rearrested over his failed December 2024 martial law declaration that caused national turmoil. A Seoul court issued the arrest warrant citing concerns he might destroy evidence related to insurrection charges. Yoon faces trial for attempting to impose military rule during a six-hour standoff that led to his historic impeachment in April. This marks his second arrest after being briefly detained in January before being released on technical grounds. If convicted, Yoon could face life imprisonment or the death penalty for his role in the political crisis.
