‘Not our war’ – Trump’s Nato weapons deal for Ukraine sparks MAGA anger

Posted on July 16, 2025

President Trump announced a plan to supply weapons to Ukraine through NATO, with Europe footing the bill, while threatening Russia with new tariffs if no peace deal is reached within 50 days. This sparked immediate backlash from his MAGA base, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and former advisor Steve Bannon, who called it a betrayal of Trump’s ‘America First’ non-interventionist promises. Critics argue the Ukraine conflict is a ‘European war’ that shouldn’t involve US resources or risk escalation. The White House defended the move by emphasizing European payment and citing polls showing majority support among Trump voters, but isolationist supporters remain fiercely opposed, stating ‘this is not our war’. The rift highlights tensions between Trump’s campaign rhetoric and the realities of international alliances.
