Fever’s Clark also has bone bruise, source says

Posted on August 21, 2025

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has suffered an additional injury with a mild bone bruise on her left ankle during a workout earlier this month, adding to her existing groin injury that has sidelined her for over a month. This news, confirmed by sources to ESPN on August 20, 2025, has raised concerns about her return timeline and the team’s playoff push.

Caitlin Clark, the 2024 No. 1 WNBA draft pick and a first-team All-WNBA selection as a rookie, is the central figure in this injury report. She is a guard for the Indiana Fever and has been a key player when healthy, averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in 13 games this season before her injuries.

The injury occurred during a workout on August 7, 2025, while the team was on the road in Phoenix. Clark tweaked her left ankle, resulting in a bone bruise, which was separate from but concurrent with her right groin injury sustained in a game against the Connecticut Sun on July 15.

The news came to public attention on August 20, 2025, when sources confirmed the ankle injury to ESPN, following initial reports by Fieldhouse Files. This disclosure happened amid ongoing rehab for her groin injury, with no specific timetable for her return announced by the team.

The cause of the ankle injury was an accidental tweak during a workout session, part of her rehabilitation routine. Despite the new injury, team officials emphasized that it did not alter her return timeline, as she was already ruled out due to the groin issue and focusing on individual rehab work.

The impact of this news is significant for the Indiana Fever, who are currently 19-16 and pushing for a playoff spot with nine regular-season games remaining. The team is already short-handed, having lost three other guards—Aari McDonald, Sydney Colson, and Sophie Cunningham—to season-ending injuries in recent weeks. Clark’s absence has left a void in the lineup, affecting team performance and fan morale, with supporters expressing frustration over unclear communication from the organization.

Looking ahead, Clark continues to rehab both injuries, with an emphasis on full-court running and individual work, but she has not yet returned to team practices. Indiana coach Stephanie White has expressed hope that Clark will return before the end of the regular season in early September, but no firm date has been set. The focus remains on ensuring she returns fully healthy to avoid further setbacks.
