Stephen Colbert Cancellation is a Consequence of Capitalism, Dave Portnoy SaysnnBarstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy claims CBS cancelled Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ due to financial losses exceeding $40-50 million annually, calling it ‘capitalism in the real world.’ Portnoy criticized Colbert for publicly attacking CBS after the network settled a $16 million lawsuit with Donald Trump, suggesting such criticism was unwise for an unprofitable employee. He dismissed claims of political motivation, arguing the cancellation was purely economic as late-night ratings decline industry-wide. Colbert had called Paramount’s Trump settlement a ‘big, fat bribe’ just days before CBS announced the show’s 2026 cancellation. Portnoy contrasted Colbert’s 200-person production team with Barstool’s more cost-effective model producing over 30 shows.
